The Three Modes of Material Nature

Part 1

Notes to The Reader

Frist I want to acknowledge that my dear godbrother, Kundali dasa, is the original author of the body of work; all written and published in Vrindavana India in the first half of the 1990’s, on his own under the “Eye of the Bird Books”, and as co-leader of the 6 person team, known as the JIVA’S Project[1], (Jiva Goswami, Institute for Vaisnava Studies), created in order to translate from Sanskrit into English, the Sat-sandarbhas of Srila Jiva Goswami, and after that, the other works of the Six Goswami’s of Vrindavana.

Kundali Dasa had by then established himself, as the most prolific writer in ISKCON, of Krishna-consciousness books, essays, and articles that were posted on the BTG magazine.  So much so, that the author of the Srila Prabhupada-lilamrta, Satsvarupa dasa Goswami, in the fall of 1995 came to visit Kundali, in order to give his positive encouragement and approval of the books Kundali had produced in Vrindavana.  I personally was there at this meeting, were Satsvarupa said,

“Kundali Prabhu, Srila Prabhupada, once explained to, me that the Bhagavad-gita is actually a treatise on Human Psychology.  He even instructed me to write a book, presenting the Bhagavad-gitaAs It Is, as nothing but Pure Human Psychology.  This perplexed me, for at that time I could not even think of how could I do that.  He ordered me to do it.  That was a long time ago, and ever since, my mind has been troubling me, until I read all of your books, including your work on the Sat-sandarbhas, and I am absolutely convinced, that it should be “you”, who should write this book, and ordered by Srila Prabhupada; you are certainly the most qualified to fulfill this instruction by Srila Prabhupada.”

I want every one to know, that at time when I came to live in Vrindavana, my intention was to go and live in Radha-kunda.  However, while saying in the Krishna & Balarama Mandir Guest-house in the summer of 1993, Krishna saved me that more or less outrages notion of mine, that I would live the rest of my life in Radha-kunda, and just chant the Maha-mantra for the rest of my life.  One of the original members of the JIVA’S Project, became aware of my presents in Vrindavana, and approached me after finding out that I was retired computer systems consultant from Los Angeles.  He told me all about the JIVA’S Project, and explained that maybe I could give some assistance to Satyanarayan Dasa who at that time was translating the Srimad-Bhagavatam Mahatmya.   So, I agreed, and every morning that summer, I would go to Satyanarayan’s work place, and he would give me a spiral notebook, on which he had written the translations and commentary.  I would then, with an Acer mini-lap-top, and an early version of MS-Windows, and MS-Word; transcribe his previous days work on to a Word-document.

Getting to know me, and my professional background, the JIVA’S Project team members, Satyanarayana Dasa and Kurma-rupa Dasa, asked me to join their project.
